Within Catholicism and some other Christian churches, the tabernacle is a box- like vessel where reserved consecrated hosts (Eucharist) are kept. The term "tabernacle" arose for this item as a reference to the Old Testament tabernacle which was the locus of God's presence among the Jewish people - hence, it was formerly required (and is still generally customary) that the tabernacle be covered with a tent-like veil or curtains across its door when the Eucharist is present within."7

A Catholic priest with a black skullcap and green robe. (green is the daily vestment). In front is the altar with the Roman Missal and burning incense. On the floor is the Incense container and spoon.

In Christianity, Jesus is known as the High priest because He offered Himself as the sacrifice for the atonement of our sins, and continues to be offered at every mass during the consecration of bread and wine.

The Hebrew priests are the ones who offer the sacrifice. In the Roman Catholic Church, only the priest can perform the consecration of the bread and wine to be transformed to the body and blood of Christ.God’s priests Likewise we are to serve as God’s priests.

Question: How can I become a priest, I’m female?

God’s reply:

Saint Faustina was a priest. I accepted the sacrifice at her hands.

Saint Faustina is the saint to whom Jesus taught the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. In this chaplet, the person praying says: “Eternal Father, I offer You the body and blood, soul and divinity of Your dearly beloved son, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and the sins of the whole world.”

We are all to serve as God’s priest, regardless of our gender.

  • The meaning of the green vestment: "During Sundays and weekdays in which the Church acknowledges no feasts, priests wear their green chasubles. Green vestments signify a time between liturgical seasons, called Ordinary Time on the Church calendar. The Church designates Ordinary Time as the period between the celebration of Christmas and the observance of Lent."8

I found the meaning of the green robe in this sculpture through a sermon of a priest. As the priest explained, the Christmas season in the Roman Catholic church ends on the Feast of Jesus Baptism. After Jesus baptism, He began His public life. This was His daily life up until the time of His persecution and death. Thus, the color green symbolizes the everyday life of a priest. Meaning, serving as God’s priest is our everyday role.

  • The meaning of the black skull cap: In the Roman Catholic church, the skullcap (which closely resembles the Jewish kippah) is said to have originated as a practical headwear to cover the priest’s baldness and keep their head warm.
